Tempered glass is heat-treated to be four to five times stronger than standard glass. When it breaks, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, which makes it the standard safety glass used in doors, shower screens, and glass partitions. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer bonded between two glass panels. When it breaks, the interlayer holds the pieces together, so the glass stays in place. Laminated glass is used for security, sound reduction, or fall protection matters, such as balustrades, shopfronts, and overhead glazing.
A frameless glass door uses tempered glass panels without visible aluminium frames around the edges. The door is held by hardware at the top and bottom, usually a floor hinge and a patch fitting, which gives a clean, uninterrupted look. It is suitable for Malaysia’s climate when installed correctly with proper waterproofing at the floor junction and quality stainless steel hardware that does not corrode. The most common problem with frameless glass doors in Malaysia is not the glass but the floor hinge corroding or the sealant at the base failing after a couple of wet seasons.
The most common reasons are debris in the track, rollers that have worn down or corroded, tracks that were installed out of level, and frames that have shifted slightly due to building movement over time. In Malaysia’s humidity, roller bearings that are not properly sealed will corrode faster than expected, especially in coastal areas or high-humidity environments like kitchens and bathrooms. The fix depends on the cause. Sometimes cleaning and lubricating the track is enough. Other times, the rollers need replacing or the track needs realigning.
For interior glass partitions, 10mm to 12mm tempered glass is standard for panels up to around 2.4 metres tall. For frameless glass doors, 12mm to 15mm is typical, depending on the door height and width. For larger openings, heavier panels, or structural applications like glass balustrades and staircases, 15mm to 19mm laminated or tempered glass is used. The correct thickness depends on the panel size, the hardware it is attached to, and how the glass is supported at the edges. Using glass that is too thin for the opening size creates deflection, which puts stress on the hardware and can lead to cracking over time.
An aluminium-framed shopfront has visible aluminium profiles around the glass panels, which provide structural support and make sealing more straightforward. A frameless shopfront uses minimal or concealed hardware to hold the glass panels, creating a cleaner, more open look. Frameless shopfronts are more expensive and require heavier glass, more precise installation, and more careful waterproofing at all connections. Aluminium-framed systems are more forgiving to install and easier to reseal when the sealant ages. The right choice depends on the building’s design intent and the budget available for maintenance over time.
Leaking aluminium windows in Malaysia are almost always a sealant problem, a drainage problem, or both. The sealant between the aluminium frame and the wall degrades over time and pulls away, allowing water to enter at the junction. The weep holes at the bottom of the frame, which drain any water that enters the frame cavity, get blocked with dust and debris and overflow inward. In both cases, the fix is accessible without replacing the window. If the frame itself has shifted or the wall opening has cracked around the frame, that is a more significant issue that needs a proper site assessment before any repair is done.
Yes, but the sequencing matters. Glass and aluminium installations should happen after plastering and waterproofing are complete, but before flooring and final painting. If glass work is done after flooring, the floor surface needs to be fully protected because glass handling and frame installation create scratches and marks that are difficult to remove. If it is done before waterproofing, the frame junctions are not properly sealed into the waterproofing system. Costs vary considerably based on glass type, thickness, frame system, opening size, hardware quality, and finish. A basic aluminium-framed sliding door costs significantly less than a frameless glass partition with stainless steel hardware.
